Welcome
Bay View House is an exclusive luxury holiday property in the heart of the Wild Atlantic Way, fully managed from arrival to departure — privacy, comfort and genuine island hospitality, taken care of.
Bay View House stands on Clare Island, a short ferry crossing from Westport Town on the world-famous Wild Atlantic Way, in a setting of exceptional natural beauty. Our team meets every group at the ferry, carries your bags up to the house, and gives you a personal welcome and tour on arrival, so you can settle in straight away. We’re on call throughout your stay for anything you need.
The house itself dates back to the 1870s and sits atop a small cliff overlooking the Atlantic, with views across to Croagh Patrick, Mweelrea Mountain and the hills of Connemara. It offers a haven of peace and tranquillity just 300m from the island’s harbour and its blue flag beach, watched over by the castle of the island’s famous Pirate Queen, Grace O’Malley.
For an added touch, we offer optional catering throughout your stay: barbecues on the terrace, relaxed pizza nights, full set dinners, or a seafood feast featuring fresh local lobster and produce sourced from the island and its surrounding waters.
The House
The original house was built in 1870 by the O’Donnells of Newport House, as a summer retreat on the island. The O’Donnells were the landlords of Clare Island until the Congested District Board bought the island from them in 1895 and striped the land, giving each resident a section of land and dwelling as their own.
